Robert Motherwell -
1959

Born in in Aberdeen, Washington in 1915, Robert Motherwell was more an Abstractionist than a Surrealist. An intellectual, he was one year shy of obtaining his Ph.D. in philosophy when he changed his direction to art history. Although a prolific painter, with his exceptional background he also became a popular and effective speaker and writer. He died in 1991.
