Kurt Seligmann was born in
Switzerland in 1900. He joined the Surrealist movement in 1929 while living in
Paris and moved to the United States his wife Arlette in 1939 ahead of other
émigrés, many of whom became indebted to him for his relentlessness in
arranging for their own escapes to America. His style is definitely
idiosyncratic. Besides painitng, he designed sets and costumes for ballets and
taught at Briarcliff Junior College and Brooklyn College. He was also
interested in magic and the occult and wrote a book entitled, The Mirror of
Magic. Seligmann died in 1962.
