There's a great site
out there. I've belonged to it almost since it's inception about 4 years ago. At
that time it was totally free. But, as with most things, the financing
eventually caught up with the owners and the site has followed the paid/free
recipe. Chessgames.com is
basically a database, but it's so much more. Access to the database remains free
but for $20/yr. members have access to premium features.
The database is very different from run-of-the-mill databases.
The games have generally been supplied by the members and have some historical
significance. This isn't to say only important games are available, but, more to
the point, games that someone might be interested in. For instance, if you want
to find the games from Vienna, 1880, or games by Albert Einstein, or games
pre-1800 - they're all there, easy to find. Even more importantly, each person,
whose name appears in the database, has his own page; each game played by that
person has it's own page - and on these pages, members can comment, analyze and
offer their own thoughts or findings. The premium features
include an Opening Explorer, an Endgame Explorer and a
Sacrifice Explorer. I'm not a paid member, so I can't access these features,
but those who can sing their praises. It's these premium features that bring me
to the purpose of this posting. The Sacrifice Explorer is a new feature
and, as such, was put through a free-trial period. During this period, I played
with it for a little bit and came up with a list of sacrifices made by Paul
Morphy. If one were a paid member, a single click on any of the following would
bring up that game page where one could play through the game or become part of
the discussion about it.
