| This result of a single game played even comes from two accounts by Donaldson, which, however, differ from each other. The earlier account, in the Illustrated London News of 24 Jan. 1880 (p.95) gives it as a win for Staunton; the second, interestingly, from the British Chess Magazine of 1891 (quoted at Sarah's Chess Journal) gives it as a draw. Perhaps the earlier account should be given more weight? The second account makes it clear that it was played when Staunton visited Donaldson, so I presume where he lived in Dumfries, and both say June 1852. |
