This is a soft result. Chess Note 11896 quotes a journal of John Harvey Boteler (submitted by John Townsend), saying that Cochrane played Harvey (Boteler's uncle) on the HMS Antelope while in the West Indies, and 'generally beat him two out of three.' Boteler's service on that ship began in Oct. 1815, and Cochrane's had ended by May 1819, so while the exact year is not clear, I date it to 1817, which cannot be in error by more than two years. |
