Name: Mechanics Institute Handicap Tournament |
Place: San Francisco |
Start date: 1896 |
End date: 27 Apr. 1896 |
|
Notes: |
This was a 32-player knock-out handicap tournament. The report from the San Francisco Call of 28 Apr. 1896 (reproduced at the Mechanics Chess Room History website) gives the names and handicap classes of all players, but only tells us which players won in each round, not who their opponents were. So the only pairing we can rate is the final one between Walter S. Franklin and George R. Thompson (both in the first class). Each pairing was won by the winner of the first two games, draws not counting. The final was won by Franklin, but by what score is not given, so I record it as 1-0 in any case. |
