Notes: |
Only partial results available. This was a 20-player knock-out tournament in which 3 wins determined the outcome of each pairing. There were originally 21 players, but one withdrew, so the remaining 20 players in the first round led to 10 winners who advanced to the second round. Not all the names of the players are given, and not all the handicap classes even for the named players are given, so only a few encounters can be included for rating, and in many of those we only know who won, but not by what score, so a soft result of 1-0 is used. In the first round we know most of the pairings. Mouat beat Hawkes (3-0), Janion beat Innes (3-0), Wilson beat Booth (3-1), Johnson beat Taylor (perhaps 3-2), Sargison beat Macintosh, and Perry beat Worthragton, but in each of these cases the odds class of the second-named player is not known. Singer played Archer in the first round, and Mander played Morrish, and we know their odds classes, but we don't know the winner of these encounters. We don't know who Christie's opponent was in the first round (the 20th player). With the information available, we know or can infer that Mouat, Hay, and Janion were in the 1st class, 1st division; Johnson, Wilson, Christie, and Singer were in the 1st class, 2nd division; Sargison, Mander, and Morrish were in the 2nd class; Throp was in the 3rd class; Perry and Archer were in the 4th class. We can also guess that the scale of odds (with the 2 divisions of first class treated as separate classes) were Pawn and Move, Pawn and Two Moves, Knight, and Rook and Move. The only first round pairing we can rate is Hay - Throp, which chess-history.org lists as 3-1 for Hay, though the excerpts from newspaper reports given stop when the result was still 2-1 for Hay. In the second round, Mouat beat either Singer or Archer, Christie beat either Mander or Morrish, but in both cases we don't know which of the opponents won in the first round, and Sargison beat Perry, Hay beat Janion (3-1), and Johnson beat Wilson (3.5-1.5). That left 5 players. At this point Mouat played Hay and apparently won, and Christie played Sargison and Sargison apparently won, Johnson getting a bye. Then the two losers, Hay and Christie played each other, and Hay apparently won, to determine the final 4: Mouat, Sargison, Hay, and Johnson. Hay beat Johnson, and Sargison beat Mouat, and finally Hay beat Sargison to win first prize, Sargison winning 2nd, and Mouat 3rd. |
