Feenstra Kuiper and Di Felice give the result as +4-4=1. According to Forster, the result of this match was widely reported as such in contemporary sources after Burn's two wins in Mar. 1900. However, Forster explains, this score included a win by Burn in a game they had played in a county match between Lancashire and Warwickshire, which apparently was not agreed to count for their own match. Finally, they agreed to count their first game at the 1901 Llandudno tournament as the final game of their 9-game match. This game was drawn on 2 Jan. 1901, giving an official score of +5-4 for Bellingham. Here, for rating purposes, we do not wish to count any games twice, so we leave the Llandudno game as part of that tournament and give only the result of the first 8 games, played in Liverpool between Jan. and Mar. 1900, which was +4-3=1 for Bellingham. Note that Kingston and Russell cite Forster and give the result as +5-4 but give the players as 'Burn-Bellingham', suggesting that Burn won the match, which is incorrect. Forster gives the start date as 'ca. 26 January 1900', saying that it began 'on the last weekend of January'. Hilbert and Lahde give the result as 5-4 for Bellingham. |
