Staunton says in the Chess Player's Chronicle (1846, v.7, p.132) that Greville played Harrwitz even, and later (1846, v.7, p.176) that 'out of about eighty games, the balance against Mr. G---e does not exceed two games'. We have the result of two matches between them in late 1845 amounting to a score of +22-8=3 for Harrwitz. Thus, if the score of the full 80 games between them was 41-39 for Harrwitz, then the games subsequent to these first two matches must have come to 17.5-29.5 for Harrwitz. One wonders if some of the later games were played at odds? Two even games, one dated 2 Dec. 1845, are given in the 21 Dec. 1845 issue of Bell's Life in London (p.3). Another two games, again played even, appeared in the 3 May 1846 issue (p.6). Thus, the games following the first two matches started in 1845 and extended into 1846. Walker says in Bell's Life in London (3 May 1846, p.6) that they played 'nearly an hundred games before Harrwitz left Paris for Valenciennes, Mr B.G. coming off slightly in the minority.' |
