This is a partial result. The match was for the first to win five games, and the result to date is given as +3-3=1 in note (l) to the game printed in the May 1847 issue of the American Chess Magazine (pp.159-160). Since the given game is dated 13 Apr. 1847 and the match was near completion, I guess that it finished in Apr. 1847. On p.181 of the June 1847 issue, it is stated that Thompson won each of the short matches he played against Hammond, but no final scores are given. So this match was won by Thompson with a score of 5-4 or 5-3 with at least one draw. It is also reported, in a later issue the same year (p.266), however, that Hammond narrowly beat Thompson when Thompson visited Boston. So the balanced result reported here is not a distortion of the relative ability of Hammond and Thompson in 1847. |
