Notes:
Staunton in the Illustrated London News (24 July 1847, p.59) says this match took place 'at the commencement of this year'; I take that to mean Jan. 1847. He identifies the loser of this match as 'Mr. D. (Delta), the best player in the Dumfries Chess Club', that is, Rev. John Donaldson, and gives one game. However, in the 17 July 1847 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle (p.226), Staunton says he has received some games 'lately played by Mr. Donaldson, the well known victor in the London and Edinburgh match by correspondence, many years ago', that is, James Donaldson. In the 31 July issue (pp.240-241), he again identifies the older Donaldson and gives two games against Capt. J.G. Bell, and a third game on p.250 of the 7 Aug. 1847 issue. A fourth game (a draw) appears on p.48 of the Feb. 1848 Chess Player's Chronicle. The fact that the reports in the two publications appeared at the same time, both regarding games between Donaldson and Capt. J.G. Bell, suggests that they refer to the same event, but the Donaldson identified is different in the two reports. Are these inconsistent or did Bell play both Donaldsons? I take the Illustrated London News version at face value, as played by the younger Donaldson, and assume that the games in the Chess Player's Chronicle do in fact belong to the other Donaldson.
