| Partial result. This was to be a match won by the first to win 8 games. The 10 May 1857 issue of the Era names the players as 'J. Cunningham' and 'H.G. Cattley', while the 17 May 1857 issue names them as 'W. Cunningham' and 'A.G. Cattley'. Certainly, it was 'H.G. Cattley', so I will guess that 'J. Cunningham' is also correct. The New York Clipper of 27 Jun. 1857 says, confusingly, that 'the first three games in five are scored by Mr. C.' |
