The Chess Player's Chronicle of Apr. 1856 (p.121) says Owen and Kipping played 4 matches (including this one) during Owen's residence at Manchester. From dates of associations with clubs alluded to in the Illustrated London News and Chess Player's Chronicle (in 1853 Owen lived in Warrington according to the 21 May 1853 issue of the ILN, p.403; no mention of Owen at events in Manchester through 1854, e.g. their annual supper in Oct., according to the 28 Oct. 1854 issue of the ILN, p.423; Owen did not participate in the Manchester - Liverpool matches in Apr. and June, 1855 according to the May issue of the CPC, p.176, and the Sept. issue, p.304 of the CPC; Owen was living in Manchester in July 1855, according to the 14 July 1855 issue of the ILN, p.43), I take it that Owen resided in Manchester only briefly, in 1855 and possibly a little before and after. Furthermore, the Dec. 1855 issue of the CPC (p.398) gives results of the first 2 matches and says the third was pending as of 1 Nov. 1855, so the 4th must have begun after this, and the Jan. 1856 issue of the CPC (p.5) gives 'games lately contested in matches between' Owen and Kipping. However, the ILN of 1 Dec. 1855 (p.650) gives a total for recent matches between the two that is similar to (but not exactly the same as) the total for the first 3 matches listed in the CPC.Thus, this match (the fourth of the 4 listed in the Apr. 1856 issue of the CPC) must have taken place in Dec. 1855 or early 1856. I will guess that it took place at the end of 1855. |
