| Spinrad gives this result from the Albion of 25 Apr. 1857, saying it was a return match and that in the first match W.W. Montgomery beat Perrin in every game except one draw. I guess that the match finished in Apr. 1857. Confusingly, the 27 June 1857 issue of the New York Clipper says that 'The remainder of a last year's match between Messrs. Perrin and Montgomery have been cleared off and won by Mr. M. A return match between the same players now stands, drawn, 1; Mr. P., 3; Mr. M., 4: 5 games to win.' I will guess that the 'last year's match' refers to this one ending in Apr. 1857, and that yet another match began later and was still going on at the end of June. |
