The Watertown Re-Union of 18 Jun. 1874 give a result to date of +3-2=1 for Neill. The Westminster Papers of 1 Aug. 1874 cite the Danbury News (Neill's chess column) to say that Neill was moving to Philadelphia, and the match was called off when the score was 3-2 for Neill. I assume the draw here was ingored. This match followed their match for the New England championship, which took place in May 1874, and judging by the dates of the reports, I will guess that it ended in June 1874. The 5 Jun. 1874 issue of the Meriden Daily Republican gives a score to date of +2-0=1 for Neill, so I will guess that the match began in May. |
