| The Sprit of the Times of 21 Nov. 1874 gives the result to date as +2-2=1, saying that the fifth game was played 'on Saturday evening' (14 Nov. 1874). The Spirit of the Times of 19 Dec. 1874 doubts that the match will ever be finished. The Maryland Chess Review of Jan. 1875 (p.31) complains about the slow progress of the match, and the Hartford Weekly Times of 20 Feb. 1875 says that the score is still +2-2=1. In the Meridan Daily Republican of 14 May 1875, repeated in the Hartford Weekly Times of 15 May 1875, is a letter from Ulrich saying that differences between the players were holding it up. The Hartford Weekly Times of 29 May 1875 says that Ulrich had forfeited his claim to the championship of Hartford, failing to resolve his differences with Cunningham. The result +2-2=1 is therefore complete, played entirely in 1874. |
