Notes: |
The Schachzeitung of Oct. 1853 (p.322) says that Staunton first played de Rives even and then giving a handicap, and overall won a majority. Then the Schachzeitung of Nov. 1853 (p.348) says that in the series of games at Pawn and 2 Move odds, they each won about the same number of games. Compiling the games given in the Illustrated London News, the Chess Player's Chronicle, and the Schachzeitung (and noting that some games appear in more than one of those sources), the result is +4-5=1 for Staunton. This is close enough to the general statement in the Schachzeitung that I will assume it was the actual result. If not, it won't be much of a distortion. |
