Spinrad gives the result +3-1 for Harrwitz from the Quarterly for Chess History, but does not mention odds, which I presume was an oversight. Both the Illustrated London News (2 June 1860, p.542) and the Chess Player's Chronicle (June 1860, pp.204-209) give wins by Harrwitz over Werner (totalling +4-0 for Harrwitz), all at Knight odds, though in two of the four in the Chess Player's Chronicle, Harrwitz gave odds of the King's Knight instead of the Queen's Knight. The Chess Player's Chronicle (p.168) gives the result of two such games played at the West Yorkshire Chess Association meeting in Bradford on 19 May (the first two played?) at odds of the Queen's Knight as +1-1. Were all these games played on the same occasion? The game in the Illustrated London News (which is the second of those in the Chess Player's Chronicle) is explicitly stated to have been, so it seems likely that the rest were also. But then the total should be at least +4-1 for Harrwitz. |
