   | Notes: |
   | The fifth game of the match was controversial. Young had a clearly won game, but was denied the win on a technicality of the rules - it was declared a draw. Since here I intend to rate players on the basis of their playing strength, I will count this last game as a win for Young. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 30 Jan. 1898 (p.27) gives the result as 4-1 for Young. Chessbase.com gives it as 3-2 for Young officially, but 3.5-1.5 if the fifth game is counted as a win for Young. | | | |
