This is a soft result, included to reflect important but otherwise-incomplete reported information. Minckwitz says in the Schachzeitung of Nov. 1869 (p.331) that by this time he was generally winning more games than von Schmidt in their mutual encounters, and that this eventually led to a series of 10 wins by Minckwitz in a row, followed by a draw, and then immediately followed by their formal match, which von Schmidt won. I don't include this as a +10-0=1 result for rating because the result of (no doubt many) games that preceded these 11 is not stated. It is indicated that Minckwitz was winning a majority though, and he clearly had a winning run, and this information needs to be accounted for in some way in the rating process because otherwise von Schmidt's match win by +5-2=1 would distort a more informed comparison of their strengths. I have therefore decided to use a soft result of +6-3 for Minckwitz, which corresponds roughly to the general indication that he was winning more, with a ratio of two thirds to take some account of the winning streak at the end, and enough games to counter the result of the match. A stronger soft score by Minckwitz might give too much credibility to his complaint that the match score was a big surprise and highly unrepresentative of their usual results: Minckwitz might be selecting information to his advantage, just to make his case. |
