| This is a soft result. According to Delannoy, at the time of de la Bourdonnais' challenge to Mouret, which I take to be about 1820 since Mouret had just returned from a tour of England as operator of the automaton, Mouret had been considered the best player in Paris after Deschapelles, and de la Bourdonnais had been playing even (not receiving a handicap) with Alexandre and Boncourt (the other players Delannoy mentions here are perhaps from a later period). Thus, Mouret was considered better than those two players. I use a soft result of +1-0=1 to indicate this. |
