| Notes: |
| Walker, in his Bell's Life in London column of 24 May 1835, says that an unnamed correspondent recently played both La Bourdonnais and Witholm, both at Rook odds and within a few weeks of each other, and also mentions that 'This gentleman has played a single game at the Rook with the first English player, and won it in good style'. However, the phrasing 'has played' gives no time reference. Walker in this period consistently used phrases like 'the first English player' to refer to McDonnell, and I will assume that the single game was played earlier in 1835, though it might have been even earlier. |
