Acccording to Taylor Kingston (see book review web page) R.N. Coles (in World Chess Champions, Edward Winter, ed.) gives a match result of +5-1 for Staunton, giving Pawn and two moves to Taverner. Staunton gives 7 games between himself and Taverner in the Chess Player's Chronicle (v.4, 1843, pp.18-25, 132-134), 5 in the Jan. issue, 2 in the May issue. Staunton gave Taverner Pawn and move odds in all these games with the result +5-1=1. While Staunton does not say that these games constituted a match and Coles could have got his information from another source, it is tempting to think that Coles got it wrong. I do not know whether or not this was considered a formal match, but it is listed as such by Coles. Judging by the dates of the games in the Chess Player's Chronicle, I guess that the match finished in Jan. 1843. |
