| The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 20 Oct. 1895 (p.5) lists this amongst Showalter's matches with the year as 1892 and the result as 7-5 for Showalter. Many of the other match results in this article are attributed to inaccurate years and have scores that are either inaccurate or do not include draws, so the same may be true for this match against Pollock. Pollock Memories (page iii of index) gives the location as Georgetown. On p.136, the result of the match as 6.5-5.5 for Showalter, 'the two games United States Chess Association Lexington Meeting being reckoned in.' Since they scored +1-1 at the Lexington meeting, I assume this means the result of their match was 5.5-4.5 for Showalter. Pollock Memories (p.131) also gives the date of the first game as 31 July 1891. |
