Notes: |
Cornil (p. 225, but quoting La Stratégie, Aug. 1911) has 'B. Soldatenkoff'. Hilbert (pp.423-424) has 'Basil Soldatenkow'. Winter has in his index to Kings, Commoners and Knaves (p.449) 'Soldatenkov, Vassily Alexeevich'. Winter's article at Chess Notes is inconclusive about his full name but mentions a 'Vasilij Vassilievich Soldatenkov', born circa 1869 at Tachanj, Pltv, Ukraine (and married to a 'Princess Gorchakov', which agrees with the New York Times of 18 Mar. 1920, p.11, which says that 'His first wife was the Princess Gotchakoff of Russia') as well as a 'Basil Soldatenkow', born 14 June 1877 in Moscow. The Rodovid website has a detailed biography, saying that he was born to a wealthy Moscow family 14 Jul. 1879, that his first wife was 'Princess Elena Gorchakova', and that he died 31 Jul. 1944. Alan McGowan sent me a copy of a WW1 US Registration card, which gives his name as 'Basil Basil Soldatenkov', and his birthdate as 27 June 1879. |
