Notes:
Steve Mann has 'T. Thornton'. Land and Water (22 Mar. 1884, p.274) has 'J. Thornton' playing for Bradford. I presume these were the same player. The Hastings and St. Leonard's Observer of 3 Sept. 1904 has a 'Sir J. Thornton' playing for the Southern Counties Chess Union. I guess that he is dofferent.
