The result of the first round match Milne-Wroe is not known, though Milne won the first game, but Milne must have won in the end to advance (which means he ended up with 3 wins, unless Wroe quit early), so I will use a soft result of 1-0 here. The result of the Payne-Tegeler match was either 3-2 or 2.5-1.5, but it is not clear which. We know that after 3 games the score was 2-1 and that Payne won on the 5th game (his third win), but we don't know whether the 4th game was a draw or a win for Tegeler. I will guess at 3.5-1.5. Also, we know that after 3 games, Milne-Payne was 2-1 and that Milne won the match (meaning he won 3 games) but we don't know whether Payne won another game or scored some draws before Milne got his final win. I will guess at 3-1 for Milne. The Spirit of the Times of 2 Feb. 1861 (quoting the Manchester Guardian of 12 Jan. 1861) has 'Wilkinson' here, but later reports have 'Wilkins'. |
