Notes: |
Only partial results available. This was a 12-player knockout tournament. Most likely, each pairing was won by the first player to score 3 games in the first round, as in the subsequent rounds, but the Chess Monthly only indicates who beat who, so I record these conservatively as 1-0 in each case. Who won in each round can be deduced from the pairings given and from who went on to the next round. Second round results are given in the Daily Alta California of 3 Apr. 1858. Fuller, Sharp and Gardiner won in the second round and the third round pairing is Fuller-Gardiner, for which the full result +3-1=0 for Gardiner is given in the Daily Alta California of 10 Apr. 1858, so Sharp got a bye. Since Gardiner was the ultimate winner of the event, and since Sharp got second prize, I presume there must have been a final between Gardiner and Sharp, won by the former. The Daily Alta California of 23 Mar. 1858 has 'E.A. McLemore' listed as the opponent of Parsons in the first round. Later accounts have 'J.P. Nourse' as the opponent of Parsons, so there must have been a switch before play began. |
