Notes: |
There were only two players in the first class, Frere and Scripture. The Brooklyn Daily Standard Union of 9 Aug. 1893 and the New York Sun of 9 Aug. 1893 give the results of the first two games, 1-1. The New York Sun report also said that 'the deciding game will be played today' (i.e. the 9th). The New York Sun of 10 Aug. 1893 reports two wins by Frere over Scripture. It is not entirely clear whether that is meant to indicate two additional games after the two reported on the 9th, or whether one of the wins by Frere was reported both days. The 'deciding game' comment suggests that only one more game had to be played at that point, and in the class A1 event, which also had only 2 players, the match was considered won after two wins by Pollock. On the other hand, the New York Recorder of 18 Aug. 1893 explicitly states that Frere won 3 of the 4 games played. That might have been an erroneous interpretation of the earlier reports, of course. I will guess that the actual score was 2-1 for Frere. |
