Name: Darlinghurst Club Handicap Tournament |
Place: Sydney |
Start date: 31 July 1868 |
End date: 1869 |
|
Notes: |
The 1 Aug. 1868 issue of the Sydney Mail (p.4) says that the tournament began 'last night'. The 7 Nov. issue gives almost complete scores with only three games remaining to be played. The 16 Jan. 1869 issue (p.5) says the tournament was not yet completed. Then, after a long hiatus, in which the usual chess column was did not appear, the final results are given in the 25 Dec. 1869 issue (p.2). The tournament must have finished sometime between 16 Jan. and 25 Dec., probably earlier in that period. The play-off for third was won by Pendrill, but no actual score is given. I assume 1-0. Although Newcombe is a class E player, he may have received even longer odds than the Rook from first class players, and so on. Thus, he should perhaps be placed effectively in a class F by himself, though I don't know exactly what odds were given, so I've left him in class E as if he were getting odds appropriate to that class. This may cause his rating to be somewhat elevated. |
