Notes: |
This was originally a 26-player all-play-all tournament, but 7 of the players withdrew early on. Travesset gives a list of results for the other 19 players part way through the tournament, also given in Los Deportes (21 Jan. 1905, p.40), and then final scores for the top 8 finishers (given in Los Deportes, 4 Feb. 1905, p.72). Several other players must have dropped out before the end in order to make sense of the final scores. Travesset says that José María Baquero was one of these, since he moved to Madrid on 14 Jan. 1905, though he was jointly leading with 10.5 points out of 11 games played at that point. He died while the tournament was still going on. I am guessing that 15 players finished and that the final scores of the top 8 are out of 14 possible points. It is technically possible that 16 players finished, and that these scores are out of 15 points, but this would require the bottom 8 players to have had a rather high average score (5.375), which seems less likely. Walter Chan has found the result of two of Baguero's games in Los Deportes, a win against Puig and a draw with Canon. I don't know who his other nine games were against, though, so I will not include his results. |
