Event data
Name: Cuban Championship
Place: Havana
Start date: Sep. 1896
End date: Dec. 1896

Notes:
Only partial results available. El Ajedrez Magistral (vol. 2) has the scores of the top four, and makes it clear that it was a two-round all-play-all, but does not give the total number of players. The scores given, however, are consistent only with a total number of players between 10 and 13. A 13-player tournament would make the average score of the bottom 9 players 11.39, which is highly implausible, and even a 12-player tournament makes the average score of the bottom 8 players 9.8, which still seems unlikely. Most likely, therefore, there were either 10 or 11 players in the tournament. I will guess at 10 players in total (so scores out of 18), somewhat arbitrarily, though the difference in rating effect between choosing 10 and 11 should be small. The known games date from Sep. and Oct. 1896, though the event may have gone later. The play-off between Celso Golmayo and Vazquez seems to have taken place in early 1897.
