Only partial results available. This was originally a 14-player all-play-all, but final scores were out of 12 so I guess that one player dropped out, probably T. Haden, who had a score of 0/1 as of the 23 Jul. 1870 report in the Sydney Mail. I give only the scores of the 6 players for whom I know their final scores out of 12. Lea, Smith and Pendrill played off for second prize. The odds were unusual, in that first class players did not give the same odds as others, based on the number of classes lower their opponent was. There were 5 classes and from classes 2 to 5, the odds were 2 moves for 1 class difference, Pawn and 2 moves for 2 classes difference, and Knight for 3 classes difference. First class, however, gave odds of Pawn and move to second class, exchange and move (i.e., giving a rook for a knight and the move) to third class, Knight to fourth class and Rook to fifth class. In order to track this properly in my software, I have to call the five classes 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 (instead of 1 to 5). |
