Event table notes

Event data
Name: Otago Club Championship
Place: Dunedin
Start date: Nov. 1897
End date: Dec. 1897

Notes:
The report in the New Zealand Mail of 4 Nov. 1897 (p.8) says that the tournament had just started. The Otago Witness of 4 Nov. 1897 (p.48) gives a game from the tournament Cleland-Edwards 1-0. The report in the Otago Witness of 2 Dec. 1897 (p.48) gives inconsistent scores: even after the two half points are added to the losses column, the number of wins totals to 29 and the number of losses totals to 27. Scores to date (or to 20 Nov.) given in the 25 Nov. 1897 issue of the Otago Witness (p.40) are consistent, with 22 points in both wins and losses columns. Comparing the two and assuming as the most likely case that only a single number was printed incorrectly, either Balk should have two fewer wins, or Mouat should have 2 fewer wins, or H.J. Cleland should have 2 more losses. The fact that the 2 Dec. 1897 Otago Witness says that second place 'has not yet been decided' suggests that Balk's score is given incorrectly and should be 5-3, not 7-3, since in the latter case, his second place would have been confirmed. However, the 4 Dec. 1897 issue of the Evening Star (supplement, p.5), gives the final rank order with Edwards ahead of Mouat, which is not consistent with the scores given in the 2 Dec. Otago Witness, unless Mouat's score is incorrect and should be +3-5, not +5-5, since Edwards' score is given as +3.5-5 (should be -5.5). One might expect Mouat's score to be reported correctly, though, since he wrote the chess column in the Otago Witness. I will assume that the 2 Dec. Otago Witness report should have +5-3 for Balk, which means that the second Balk-H.J. Cleland game was still unplayed (the first was given in the 11 Nov. Otago Witness) and each of them had another game left to play, one against Edwards and one against Dawe (I will guess that Balk-Edwards and H.J. Cleland-Dawe were still unplayed).
