| Contemporary newspaper reports allow almost a complete reconstruction of the crosstable, but not quite complete. Official scores differ from those here because draws were not counted in the official scores but are counted here for rating, and because some unplayed games at the end of the tournament were forfeited, and those are not counted here. Also, there is some uncertainty about a few of the games. Most of the game results were reported week by week, but a few seem to have been omitted. Total scores to date given along the way do not always correspond exactly to the totals calculated from individually reported games, and sometimes the scores lists given are internally inconsistent also (total of wins not equal total of losses). The most accurate set of final scores for the top scorers seems to be that given in the 8 Aug. 1874 Australian Town and Country Journal (p.225). From this list, we can identify the number of games for each of these players that were not reported individually and we can guess at the opponents among those remaining for that player. Six players were disqualified at the end for not having played enough games. These were C. Robey, F.J. Gibbes, W. Biggs, A.S. Forster, as well as W. Wilson and W. Newcombe, for whom no games are recoreded at all, and so these last two are not included in the player list here. The opponents of the undocumented games by top scorers were less likely to be among these disqualified players, which leaves only a few options in each case. The game results I have guessed at here to make up correct totals are: Fisher-Abbey 1-0, Brown-MacDonnell 1-0, Ridley-Robey 1-0, Slade-Brown 1-0, Spencer-Melhado 1-0. These may not be correct, but any errors should not alter ratings by much. There were other missing games by players not among the top scorers, but these may well have been just unplayed, and are left out here. |
