Notes: |
Only partial results available. The 4 Mar. 1884 issue of A Folha Nova (p.1) gives the final scores of all players, but does not indicate their odds classes. The 16 Jan. 1884 issue of A Folha Nova (p.3) says that there were four classes, and the scale of odds was Pawn and Move, Knight, and Rook, for class differences of 1, 2 or 3. Walter Chan (personal communication) has suggested that Napoleão dos Santos and Caldas Vianna were almost certainly in the first class, since they were recognized as the strongest players in the city (citing Distracção, 22 Jan. 1885, p.102). He also suggests that Augusto Pradez was in the second class, since that was the case in the 1885 tournament, but this seems less certain. I use only the results of the two clearly first-class players. |
