Notes:
This started out as a double-round 14-player all-play-all tournament, but at least four players (M. Morgan, Maguire, A.K. Robinson, and Kemeny) withdrew before playing all their games, and in addition, Nass seems not to have played his second round games against J.P. Morgan or Deardon. The crosstable given by Reichhelm (p.38) is inconsistent and ambiguous. Gaige reproduces this crosstable but with some subtle changes, as does Hilbert in his biography of Kemeny (p.329) and Di Felice, but all with slight differences. And all are inconsistent with games actually given by Hilbert in his biography of Kemeny (pp.119-138). Here are the discrepancies. Reichhelm's crosstable has '0' for Voigt, Young, and Hale against Kemeny, but '1-' for Kemeny against Voigt, Young, and Hale. In most places he has '0-' where the second round game was not played. Furthermore, Reichhelm's crosstable has '00' for Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan against Kemeny, but '1-' for Kemeny against Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan. So in all these five cases it unclear whether or not the second round games were played. Gaige's, Hilbert's, and Di Felice's crosstables fill in the '-' for the first three so they have '0-' for Voigt, Young, and Hale against Kemeny (Di Felice has '.' instead of '-'). This seems like a natural interpretation of Reichhelm's meaning, except that Hilbert also gives the actual second round games by Young and Hale (but not Voigt) against Kemeny, on pp.135-136, both wins for Kemeny. So these two at least were clearly played, and all the crosstables are incorrect there. Hilbert's crosstable exactly reproduces Reichhelm's discrepancy for Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan against Kemeny. Gaige at least puts a ? against each of the 4 inconsistent entries in the crosstable. Di Felice takes the '00' for Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan against Kemeny as correct, and changes the entries for Kemeny against Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan to '11'. Again, Hilbert gives the actual second-round game by J.P.Morgan against Kemeny on pp.136-137, a win by Kemeny, so this game was also clearly played. Hilbert does not give a second round game between Kemeny and Perry-Smith, but the notation in Reichhelm's crosstable suggests that it might also have been played. Hilbert does not give all of Kemeny's played games in this tournement (some were probably never published), so it is conceivable that Kemeny did play Perry-Smith in the second round, but that the game was not published. The same could be said of the second round game between Kemeny and Voigt, but there the '0' rather than '00' in Reichhelm's crosstable leaves more doubt. In any case, since neither game has been recovered, I will not include a second round game between Kemeny and either Voigt or Perry-Smith. Reichhelm's crosstable also has some ambiguities for A.K. Robinson. It has '0' for W.J. Ferris and J.P. Morgan against A.K. Robinson, and '1/2' for Young and Hale against A.K. Robinson, but then '1-' for A.K. Robinson against Ferris and J.P. Morgan, and '1/2-' for A.K. Robinson against Young and Hale. Hilbert's, Gaige's, and Di Felice's crosstables fill in the apparently missing '-' in each case, and since I have no evidence to the contrary, I will assume that these second-round games were not played. Similarly, Reichhelm's crosstable has '1' for Hale against Maguire and '0' for Perry-Smith against Maguire, but '0-' for Maguire against Hale, and '1-' for Maguire against Perry-Smith, and Hilbert's, Gaige's, and Di Felice's crosstables fill in the '-' in each case. Again, without evidence to the contrary, I assume that these second-round games were not played. Finally, Reichhelm's crosstable has '0' for Hale against M. Morgan, but '1-' for M. Morgan against Hale. Here it seems clear that no second-round game was played, since M. Morgan withdrew after playing only 4 games (a win against Hale, a draw against Bampton, and losses to D.S. Robinson and Kemeny), and the other crosstables provide the missing '-'. If Hilbert's, Gaige's and Di Felice's interpretations of Reichhelm's crosstable are correct, then A.K. Robinson withdrew after playing all his first round games and two of his second round games (a second win over Perry-Smith and a second draw against Kemeny). Reichhelm's crosstable has total scores (both wins and losses, with draws contributing 1/2 to each column) that are consistent with the ambiguous cases all being unplayed and not counted, with the exception of Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan, who get an extra loss counted from the '00' against Kemeny, though Kemeny does not get the corresponding extra win counted. So Kemeny's total score is missing the actual wins in the second round against Young, Hale and J.P. Morgan that Hilbert found. I include these three games here. Thus, Hilbert and Gaige accept Reichhelm's total score for Kemeny as 13-2, while Di Felice gives him 15 points (from the assumed extra wins against Perry-Smith and J.P. Morgan) and I give him 16-2 (from the known extra wins against Young, Hale, and J.P. Morgan).
