Name: Philidor Club Tournament
Place: Amsterdam
Start date: 11 June 1852
End date: 1852

Notes:
This was an 8-player single-round all-play-all tournament, in which draws had to be replayed. Moreover, it was played with the initial piece positions randomized (what is now called FischerRandom Chess or Chess960 or Freestyle Chess), which I have decided should be considered ratable. Some games seem not to have been played, or at least not recorded: van 't Kruijs - Coopman, Seligmann - Praag, and Coopman - van der Hoeven. The game Mohr - Praag was either drawn or unfinished (I record it as drawn). Otherwise drawn games occurred between van 't Kruijs and Praag, where the former won the replay, and between Heijmans and Mohr, where the former won the replay. Finally, Heijmans and van't Kruijs played two draws before Heijmans finally won in the third game. However, the rules stipulated that the player with the most points had to play a deciding game against the player with the next-most points. Heijmans had won 6 of his 7 encounters, while van 't Kruijs had won 5 (or possible 6, if he did finally play Coopman and win, though I have no evidence of this and don't include such a win here). Their first deciding match game was drawn, and van 't Kruijs won the second game, to win the tournament. The Oct. 1853 issue of Sissa gives the start date as 11 Jun. 1852 (p.307), and says that the tournament was held in 1852 (p.306). It also says that it lasted longer than expected (p.307), but I will assume that it did indeed finish in 1852, despite the long delay in reporting the results.
