The Palestine Bulletin of 29 Feb. 1928 (p.3) gives scores for the top 11 players, and says there were 18 rounds, which indicates 19 players. However, the scores given are inconsistent with this number of players. A 19-player single-round all-play-all involves 171 games, and the total of the 11 scores given is 145, which leaves 26 points unaccounted for. However, the bottom 8 players, whose scores are not given, must have played 28 games amongst themselves, so the 145 points for the top 11 is too much to allow for this. I will guess that there were 20 players, and thus 19 rounds, so that Marmorosh's score was 18/19 not 18/18, and the total number of games should be 190. Then, subtracting the 145 points given leaves 45 points for the bottom 9 players, and the bottom 9 would play 36 games amongst themselves, which is consistent. The average score of the remaining 9 players would be 5, which is plausible given that the 11th player scored 10. This may be wrong, but it seems at least plausible, or perhaps even likely. |
