Event data
Name: Turgenev Tournament
Place: Paris
Start date: 1861
End date: Mar. 1861

Notes:
This was a 12-player knockout tournament. The names of all the players are given in the Mar. 1861 issue of La Nouvelle Régence (p.94): Brandon, Brun, Chapelle, Delannoy, Durantel, Lequesne, Maczuski, Mortimer, Mozengel [Mosengel], Quentin, Tourgueneff [Turgenev], Vialay. Who played who is not specified, but the 6 winners of the first round are given: Brun, Chapelle, Durantel, Lequesne, Maczuski, Mozengel. Similarly, for the second round, pairings are not given but the 3 winners were: Brun, Durantel and Maczuski. The Apr. 1861 issue (p.122) says that in the final pool of 3, Brun successively beat Durantel and Maczuski, to win the prize. Since we know who played who in the final pool, these games are usable. Note that at the end of the game Brun-Durantel from this tournament, given in La Nouvelle Régence (pp.108-109), it says in error 'Les Blancs abondonnent' where it should say 'Black resigns'. I am guessing that the event finished in Mar. 1861, since it is reported in the Apr. 1861 issue of La Nouvelle Régence and since it was not finished at the time of the report in the 10 Mar. 1861 issue of the Era (p.15).
