Event data
Name: Mercantile Library Chess Club Tournament
Place: Philadelphia
Start date: 1897
End date: 1897

Notes:
Reichhelm's scores are inconsistent. It was clearly a 12-player double-round all-play-all but many of Wyeth's games were not played. Reichhelm reports the number of points won and the number of points lost by each player. However, the total number of points won (121) does not match the total number of points lost (119). Either one player's score has one too many wins and one too few losses, or the winning points are correct and Wyeth and one other player have a missing point on the losing side (since the number of games missed by Wyeth should match the number of games missed by all other players combined). The latter is perhaps more likely, as the points won are more likely to be correctly reported than the points lost, so I assume this to be the case. There is no indication, however, of which other player has the missing loss. Rather than not use this tournament, I have made the somewhat arbitrary choice of Baumann, one of the players who is reported to have played only 20 out of 22 games and who is near the bottom of the table. So I take Wyeth's score to be 6.5-4.5 (rather than 6.5-3.5 as reported) and Baumann's score to be 5.5-15.5 (rather than 5.5-14.5 as reported). The effect will not be large.
