The report in the Feb. 1898 American Chess Magazine (p.531) gives scores totalling to 64, though the total should be 66 for a 12-player, single-round, all-play-all tournament. The report says that one game was unplayed (Prender-Crofts), but there must have been another, despite the other players' wins and losses all totalling 11. I will guess, somewhat arbitrarily, that the game between the bottom two players, Campbell-Allen, was unplayed, though this may be wrong. The player named 'Prender' is called 'Allen Prender' in the Dec. 1897 issue of the American Chess Magazine (p.430), but I believe this to be an error for John Prender, since 'Allen' is the surname of another player in this tournament, and the only Prender who appears elsewhere is John Prender. I will guess that the tournament ended in Jan. 1868. |
