Notes: |
In the San Francisco Chronicle of 6 Nov. 1898 (p.19), Fairweather's score is shown as +0-12=0. According to the Mechanics' Institute web page, which cites the 1898 American Chess Magazine, 'Fairweather's score is given as shown [...-12] with nothing in the win column, but player's scores for numbers 1-12 come out even.' By 'come out even' it is meant that the wins and losses add to 12 for each player, as they would in a 13-player single-round all-play-all tournament. However, the sum of scores for the 12 players with scores given does not total to 78, as it should for a full crosstable, but to 73. Fairweather's number of wins are not given, but if it were 0, as suggested by the '12' in the losses column and as given explicitly in the San Francisco Chronicle, we are short 5 points from the total. All works out correctly, though, if Fairweather got 5 wins. I suspect that he did score 5 wins, but that at some point subsequently his score was erased, perhaps as a result of withdrawing from the tournament. I will assign him a score of 5, as a best guess at the true situation. |
