Gaige and Di Felice have Marshall winning both games over Howell and losing both to Pillsbury. Hilbert's book on this tournament clarifies that Marshall actually lost both games to Howell and got one draw against Pillsbury. Goeller and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi also indicate that Marshall's second win over Karpinski was by forfeit. Gaige, Pope, Di Felice and the Marshall Career web page show it as a genuine win. Hilbert did not find the game but found evidence that it was played. |
