Notes:
A 12-player single-round all-play-all tournament. The reports in the Illustrated London News, the Chess World, and the Chess Player's Magazine say that Drew did not lose a game, that Hamel and Kidson were next with 8/11 and then Benholme and Semple, who scored 7 each. No mention is made of draws. The Chess World (Sep. 1866, vol.2, p.195) has 'Temple' instead of 'Semple'. The other 7 players were W. Beckett, Dr. J.H. Bennett, W. Grimshaw, W. Park, J.W. Morley, G.F. Bodington and T. Fieldsend. Their scores are not reported, but Sean Marsh quotes the South Durham Herald to say that Grimshaw scored officially +6-2, which put him in 6th place. He also quotes another newspaper, saying that Dr. Bennett had to withdraw, so some of his games may have been defaulted. Marsh also claims that Drew won 10 games and lost none, so perhaps a default win over Bennett was not counted. Also, it appears that draws did not count as the South Durham Herald says that Grimshaw had a draw with Drew. I will assume that Drew beat Bennett by default and will not count this game, but take the other totals out of 11 as given, as I am not sure who won from Bennett by default and who did not. I also add in the draw between Grimshaw and Drew, but as a match, just because it is hard for my software to include just total scores out of varying numbers of games without a crosstable. Steve Mann gives the same information on results, and gives dates 6-11 Aug. 1866.
