Name: Liverpool Club Handicap
Place: Liverpool
Start date: 30 Oct. 1871
End date: 3 June 1872

Notes:
Only partial results available. This was a 31-player single round all-play-all, but we only have scores for the top three finishers with all the other players. I have left the rest of the crosstable blank. Many games were defaulted, and 4 players defaulted against all of the top 3 finishers, so we have no result at all for W. Grasby, W.R. Mellor, J. Owen or H. Walker. The odds were complicated with a system that applied consistently for most of the players in the 5 classes, but Burn and Owen formed a special section of the first class giving additional odds beyond the usual in a 5-class tournament to some of the members of other classes. To get my software to attach the correct odds to each pair of players, I had to split the 5 classes up into 19 pseudo-classes (some empty) so that differences between classes would give the right odds.
