Urcan, in his book on Adolf Albin (p.123) gives Albin's opponent in this match as Charles S. Martinez. Reichhelm, in Chess in Philadelphia (p.20) gives only 'Martinez', but in his index (p.156) makes it clear that this referred to 'Martinez, D.M.' and not 'Martinez, C.S.'. Urcan may have got the two confused, as he says of Charles S. Martinez in 1895, that he was a 'former president of the Franklin Chess Club'. According to Hilbert's book, 'Walter Penn Shipley' (p.24), Dion M. Martinez was president of the Philadelphia Chess Club from 1880 to 1885 and then continued as president for a year when it became the Franklin Chess Club. Also according to Hilbert (pp.39-40), Charles S. Martinez was the son of Dion Martinez, born in Jan. 1868, and so 27 years old at the time of his meeting with Albin in Feb. 1895. Reichhelm (pp.13-22) details the officers of the Philadelphia and then Franklin Chess Clubs every year from 1880 to 1897 and the only presidents to follow D.M. Martinez over that period were J.B. Hamel (1886-1889) and Dr. Persifor Frazer (1889-1898). My guess is that Albin's opponent was Dion M. Martinez. |
