Hooper and Whyld and Utterberg both give 1825 as the year. Murray, however, gives 1823 as do Golombek, Di Felice, La Grande Storia degli Scacchi, and Sarah. All of these sources giving 1823 as the year may be derived from Le Palamède (1836, p.226), where 1823 is given. Also, Walker, in the 13 Dec. 1840 issue (p.4) of Bell's Life in London, says that his 1840 visit was his third visit to London, after the first 'about 1823' and the second 'in 1833', though we know that was in 1834. On the other hand, in the 15 Feb. 1835 issue of Bell's Life in London (p.2), he says the match took place 'ten years back'. Furthermore, in the 4 Mar. 1838 issue (p.4), he says that de la Bourdonnais 'has only been twice in England during the fifteen years he has swayed the sceptre', and he was certainly in London in 1825, since he got married there in that year, and in 1834 for the matches with McDonnell. Much later, it is stated in the Field of 1 Oct. 1870 that de la Bourdonnais was twice in England, first 'about 1824 (we are not sure of the exact date)', and second in 1834. On balance, 1825 seems more likely to be correct than 1823. |
