The Luchini website says that Luchini became recognized as a first rank player between 1820 and 1825 when he drew a match against Topi. The Topi website says they both arrived at a score of 10 in that match. In the Schachzeitung of 1 Sep. 1867 (p.273), Dubois says that they scored 5-5. Later, however, Dubois (Nuova Rivista degli Scacchi, Jan.-Feb. 1886, p.12) says that the result was 6-6, correcting an earlier statement by him that the result was 10-10. Dubois also says that this match occurred as soon as the Academy was established in Rome, which was in 1819. The Luchini website gives his first name as Luigi, but the 1819 document detailing the regulations of the original Chess Academy in Rome, discussed by Dubois, lists 'G. Luchini' as a first class player and 'V. Luchini' as a second class player. So the identity of Luchini is not quite clear, though Dubois does talk of the Luchini listed in the first class as the one he knew in later years. |
