Event data
Place: London, England and Brighton
Start date: Aug. 1846
End date: Oct. 1846

Notes:
Part of a 21-game match (draws not counting) in which Staunton gave different odds to Harrwitz. In these 7 games Staunton gave Pawn and move. Spinrad gives Staunton's result as +0-6=1; Sarah's Chess Journal gives +1-6; Golombek, Hooper and Whyld, Di Felice, Murray, Hilbert and Mark Weeks give +1-6=1, as does the Chess Player's Chronicle and Illustrated London News; Walker gives +0-7=1 in the 11 Oct. 1846 issue of Bell's Life in London (p.8), but he corrected this the following week to +6-1=1. Feenstra Kuiper and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give +12-9=1 for the 3 matches together, which is consistent with +1-6=1 for the Pawn and move match, since there is no disagreement about the score of the other two. Giffen gives date as Oct. 1846; Di Felice gives Sept.-Oct. 1846. The match was announced as forthcoming in the 15 Aug. 1846 issue of the Illustrated London News and the 5 Sept. 1846 issue reported the result of the first 8 games (of the whole match), so I presume it began in Aug. The 10 Oct. 1846 issue of the Illustrated London News said the match had 'terminated a few days since'. Le Palamède gives dates Sept. and Oct. 1846. Staunton comments on what seems likely to be this match in the 19 Feb. 1848 Illustrated London News (p.105) and the fact that he did worse giving Pawn and Move than he did giving Pawn and Two Moves.
